Don't use $startdir in ur PKGBUILDS and well u can try leaving a comment then email him, then if no answer after so long then u can ask TU to orphan the pkg so u could adopt it and upload it Peter Simons wrote:

the nbd package at AUR, http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=9691, has been out-of-date for quite a while. I have an updated PKGBUILD (attached below) and wonder whether there is a way to make that update happen even if the maintainer of that package has apparently lost interest.
