The official PKGBUILDs in core, extra, community often don't contain "arch" variable. Of course they can't be build with simple makepkg (missing arch error). I have read Arch Packaging Standards and find no mention about a situation where omiting "arch" variable is legal.

These are old packages that haven't been updated since we started to use the arch field. Some of them are already fixed in svn.
