In the prepare()function ,use something like this :
if [[ -d "$_gitname" ]]; then
     cd "$_gitname" && git pull origin
   else
     git clone "$_gitroot" "$_gitname"
   fi

(copied from a git pkgbuild from before makepkg understood how to deal 
with vcs sources)
