Ah, that makes a lot more sense, thanks. Perhaps your email to that TU was blocked by a spam filter? You may want to contact the Arch forums with your summary. Looking at the archived PKGBUILD, yes, that (using curl to fetch fields) is low quality. The checksum field is supposed to be embedded in the PKGBUILD, not autogenerated. AFAIK Packages are meant to be self-contained and require no further internet access to install other than downloaded sources, not to mention part of a checksum's purpose is to make sure your connection isn't intercepted, and downloading the checksum over the network defeats that purpose.
