[aur-general] [Removal Request] racer-3d
Hello, I've maintained this package[1] for a while, but am now running intothe inevitable consequences of upstream development: there is none. The Linux version of this game hasn't been updated in years and nowbreaks on the latest version of the fmodex library. While it will runwith an older version, the game still segfaults for unknown reasons. With no source available, no debug symbols available... It may be timeto let this one go. Upstream only develops a windows version, their community suggests wine. [1] https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=31357
Hi, If you write a note in the comments and orhpan the package, perhaps someone else wants to give it a shot? I do understand your concern, though. Best regards, Alexander Rødseth

Alex, We could, of course; provide the outdated library in the AUR as a separate package, adjust the game so it will use the old version of the library and make sure the old and new version of the library can co-exist without breaking other things. I did consider this, but it didn't seem very arch or kiss to me. We are a rolling release distro, why would we strive to keep outdated software in the repository. Or, in this case, even supply outdated libraries to enable the outdated software to work. It all seemed reason enough for removal to me, could you comment on this again? I'll gladly keep it maintained and add AUR packages for the outdated libraries if that is what you guys feel is the way to go. Regards, Stefan
Hi Stefan, I tried the old version of racer-3d, but it didn't work properly on my computer (garbled 3d graphics). While keeping the old package in AUR could be an idea (since someone will probably submit it anyhow), I agree with what you're saying. It would seem counterproductive and non-arch/kiss-like to grant this particular package too much care and consideration. Thank you & removed. -- Cordially, Alexander Rødseth Arch Linux Trusted User (xyproto on IRC, trontonic on AUR)
