[aur-general] Merge request: zfs to zfs-git
Packages include: zfs => zfs-git zfs-utils => zfs-utils-git spl => spl-git spl-utils => spl-utils-git Reason: The original zfs packages could not keep up with the default linux kernel in Arch. ZFSonLinux is slow to make official releases and kernel API changes made basing the ZFS packages on the official release impossible without many patches from git. Users that want to continue to use official ZFS releases are encouraged to use the zfs-lts packages in AUR. Thanks, Jesus A. (demizer) Maintainer of the ZFS packages in AUR.

We definitely need some further clean-up of zfs related package on AUR. There are so much of packages that seem useless. @Jesus, since you are the zfs expert here, could you confirm these packages are useless and should be deleted from AUR? https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-zfs/ (2 years out of date) https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/zfs-linux-git/ (1 year no update) https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/zfs-behlendorf-git/ (3 years no update) Also, there are two packages that seem to do the same - zfs-dkms and zfs-modules-dkms. The latter is unmaintained (2 years out of date). Can you confirm the latter should be deleted, altogether with other zfs-related packages from the same maintainer? https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/zfs-modules-dkms/ https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/spl-modules-dkms/ https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/zfs-tools/ https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/spl-tools/ Thanks. -- Kind regards, Damian Nowak StratusHost www.AtlasHost.eu
So I had a look at the packages and here is what I found: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-zfs/ is very out-of-date and not maintained, therefore it should be deleted. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-zfs/ is replaced by zfs-git and should be deleted. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/zfs-behlendorf-git/ is replaced by zfs-git and should be deleted. The dkms packages are definitely not maintained, but useful none the less as eventually someone would probably like to build ZFSonLinux with DKMS. I don't think they are named properly though. If they can be transferred to my user "demizer" in AUR, I would be happy to eventually provide proper packages as part of the ZFS support for Arch. If we agree to a maintainer transfer, could the packages please be renamed to: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/zfs-modules-dkms/ renamed to zfs-dkms https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/spl-modules-dkms/ renamed to spl-dkms https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/zfs-tools/ renamed to zfs-utils-dkms https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/spl-tools/ renamed to spl-utils-dkms Thanks! Okay, so these should be removed: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-zfs/ https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/zfs-linux-git https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/zfs-behlendorf-git/ Felix, could you do that please?

"Renaming" is just creating a new package and "merging" the old one into new one to transfer votes and comments. But you can't just do that, since zfs-dkms already exists in the repo. ;-) Having that in mind, zfs-modules-dkms is rendered useless and should be deleted, right? By the way, I just spotted yet another zfs dkms package, can you confirm this one should be deleted too? This looks like a fork of your package, "# Maintainer: Jesus Alvarez <jeezusjr at gmail dot com>" is in there... https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/zfs-dkms-therp/ + all zfs and spl packages from here https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/?K=therp&SeB=m Regarding the existing zfs-dkms, you take over the package after you contact a maintainer and the maintainer doesn't respond in 2 weeks (or just agrees and disowns). I'd strongly encourage you to do so because it would be good to have zfs packages clean and usable in AUR. :) There are really too much results for `yaourt -Ss zfs`, most of which are unusable. -- Kind regards, Damian Nowak StratusHost www.AtlasHost.eu

Hello, sorry for the late response. It's been a busy week. I have sent a message to the maintainer of the zfs-dkms package asking him to disown the package. We'll see if he responds. And you are correct, zfs-dkms-therp would be replaced by the dkms package that I will maintain. Should we ask the maintainer of zfs-dkms-therp to disown his zfs packages? It doesn't seem like anyone uses zfs-dkms-therp because it should definitely be flagged out of date; there is no way it could build with the current kernel. Also, the names for the packages I suggested earlier are incorrect, they should really be: zfs-git-dkms zfs-utils-git-dkms spl-git-dkms spl-utils-git-dkms and zfs-lts-dkms zfs-utils-lts-dkms spl-lts-dkms spl-utils-lts-dkms Since these are not currently in AUR, I will upload them myself once I get the PKGBUILDS working. Thanks, Jesus A.

Thank you! packages? If it's a duplicate then not - AUR guys will just delete the package once we ask them. -- Kind regards, Damian Nowak StratusHost www.AtlasHost.eu
