If this package contains a set of java bindings, shouldn't it be named "java-gstreamer" as recommended by the Java Package Guidelines [1]? Why was it renamed? [1] http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Java_Package_Guidelines

The original name is gstreamer-java But we have the policies, so if you want to package a project respect ours policies.

I'm by no means arguing, but trying to get a clear idea here: So does the policy override the project name of generically named things (like libraries)? I'm just wondering where exactly there is a split between where the name should be respected vs the policy. Thanks, -- Andrei Thorp, Developer: Xandros Corp. We could use provides=('gstreamer-java') to keep the original and known project name and pkgname=java-gstreamer to respect policies. -- Andrea `bash` Scarpino Arch Linux Developer

" * If a Java library has a generic name, the package name should be prepended with the title java- to help distinguish it from other libraries. This is not necessary with uniquely named packages (like JUnit), end-user programs (like Eclipse), or libraries that can be uniquely described with another prefix (like jakarta-commons-collections or apache-ant). " Java package doesn't have to have prefix 'java'. It should have this prefix if its name is a _generic_ name. If it is a library and has other prefix that it shouldn't have prefix 'java'. Gstreamer-java is a library. Gstreamer-java has the word 'java' in name. This word is placed in the end. I think it doesn't break our rules. -- Sincerely yours, Vitaliy Berdinskikh (Виталий Бердинских) xmpp:vitaliy@berdinskikh.in.ua SIP phone: 17473293615@proxy01.sipphone.com

I'd say that gstreamer-java is a generically named library, so it should probably be java-gstreamer. Thanks for clearing it up. -- Andrei Thorp, Developer: Xandros Corp. Why not just rename it java-gstreamer-java? That way we can respect the archlinux policies, and also keep the origal name for anyone trying to find it on the aur. 2009/6/23 Andrei Thorp <garoth@gmail.com>:

I chuckled. I assume this isn't a serious suggestion. Though it would solve it, it's not really a "solution". I'm think I agree with Andrea still. -- Andrei Thorp, Developer: Xandros Corp. Just a note - I feel that it's always preferable to stick with upstream names. If it becomes too generic, then we can tack on some nomenclature. Case in point: feedparser. WTF is that? Oh it's python-feedparser! These bindings are named well enough for my tastes in the original upstream project.

As I was reading the replies to this thread I actually thought of "java-gstreamer-java" too before I saw Laurie's suggestion. It does sound a bit silly but it makes sense at the same time if gstreamer-java can only be meaningfully used by Java. With the current packaging guidelines, the "<language>-" prefix makes it instantly clear that the packages is a libarary/modules/etc of that language and not a stand-alone/front-end application. This is very useful in the absence of clear categories or tags when a user is browsing the list of available packages. Perhaps we can all agree that the best solution is to use the name "gstreamer-java", which is quite clear as Aaron pointed out, but put "java-gstreamer" and "java-gstreamer-java" in the provides array for the sake of uniformity. To be honest, I'm not really bothered either way and I only asked about the name originally because I was unaware that the upstream name was "gstreamer-java". Xyne
