[aur-general] Icons pack naming guidelines
Hi everyone, I was wondering why a lot of icon themes in AUR have this "kind" of name: $name-icon-theme. I think it should be better if the guidelines would encourage a cleaner (and IMHO better) format like: icon-theme-$name, just like the gtk-themes in AUR. What do you think? Maybe the guidelines already suggest something like this, I'm just asking since I found A LOT of packages with that "kind" of name. Have a nice day, Edoardo

*-icon-theme seems to be the convention right now, but there is no guideline about this afaik. icon-theme-* might be a good idea, but we already have gnome-icon-theme, humanity-icon-theme and the likes in our repos. Unless you want to go on a crusade to change all the icon theme packages, I'd leave it at that, seems like too much wasted energy to me. Cheers, -- Maxime

I think we should write it in the Arch Packaging Standards so they all use the same convention
I think that we should modify the convention so that it goes as icon-theme-*, gtk-theme-*, etc. so that it sorts better. On Sat, Jun 29, 2013 at 1:04 PM, Agustin Ferrario < agustin.ferrario@hotmail.com.ar> wrote:

Well, I found only almost 100 packages with $name-icon-theme. I think it would be safe to modify/create a rule so that the new packages need to be: icon-theme-$name(-$de) As soon as we finish the discussion I can contact every maintainer and point he/she to this conversation and to the new guidelines, it's a matter of a couple of minutes to change name and re-upload the package.
You should double-check some other icon themes which ship as "*-icons". Eg. oxygen-icons. J. Leclanche On 30 June 2013 23:54, Edoardo Maria Elidoro <edoardo.elidoro@gmail.com>wrote:

What do you mean by "sort better"? What difference is there between "icon-theme-*" and "*-icon-theme"? AUR has search, so it's pretty much the same, and the same applies to pacman. It's too much work to change every existing package right now (since most already use *-icon-theme) and *-icon-theme sounds more natural ie: "Just install the gnome icon theme package." sounds pretty normal. -- Hugo Osvaldo Barrera

When you search something the output is usually in alphabetical order. Having all the icon packages with the same prefix helps to group them, just like the gtk themes. It's nothing big, I understand, but it's neater than now.
