- Octave 3 is the stable and development version of octave upstream. - Octave 3 is not just an update of octave 2 but another program: the differences are big and incompatible - it takes long to build, so having a binary version would be nice.

I was thinking about moving it into community. I contacted Damir (maintainer of octave in extra) a few weeks ago but got no response. So if nobody objects I will put it into community later this evening. Ronald
