[aur-general] Removal request
There was a discussion about Abandonware in the AUR [1] but it seems nothing much came out of it. Even if we don't have an official rule about this, I would like to request a couple packages removed: * alone-in-the-dark-1 https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=46692 * battle-chess https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=46739 * space-quest-1 https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=46928 * the-incredible-machine-1 https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=46491 Each of these games can be purchased, see the forum thread [2]. In that case, useful PKGBUILDS for other games that also can be purchased should be deleted too: Humble bundle: * aquaria-hb_version https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=37013 * chocolate-castle https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=53880 * hammerfight https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=51037 * braid https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=44429 * dungeons-of-dredmor https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=54441 * frozensynapse https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=52758 * gish-hb https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=44586 * jaspers-journeys-hb https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=53964 * lugaru-hb_version https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=37023 * steelstorm2-hib https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=51204 * uplink-hib https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=54401 Or in fact every PKGBUILD with "commercial" license. You did not quite understand. Karol wants to drop packages with links to abandonia, where you can download these games illegally. The packages you linked to force you to get the game files yourself. -- Kwpolska <http://kwpolska.tk> stop html mail | always bottom-post www.asciiribbon.org | www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html GPG KEY: 5EAAEA16 | Arch Linux x86_64, zsh, mutt, vim. # vim:set textwidth=70:

+1 and I would like to have an official rule saying this.

Oh yes, I absolutely don't mind *installers* for games you can buy or freewares ones, sorry for any confusion. I do mind links to warez.
Allright, added a comment to each of the four packages, asking the maintainers to remove the direct download link. If they don't comply, we can consider removal of the packages. Hope this helps. -- Best regards, Alexander Rødseth Arch Linux Trusted User (xyproto on IRC, trontonic on AUR)

I think that the-incredible-machine-2 https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=46493 should receive the same note about abandonia links; sorry for not mentioning this package in the original e-mail. Most of these packages are unmaintained so I guess nobody will update them. If a two weeks notice is enough, they should get removed on Dec 22th unless you want to wait until after the X-mas / New Year.
Hi, I've discussed the matter with other TU's. Here's one way we can handle this: - If a package appears on AUR that has direct links to commercial/abandonware/warez, send an e-mail to this mailinglist. - A TU will then promptly adopt the package in question, remove the direct link and then leave it as an orphan for anyone to pick up. This method is balanced, as it administers a tiny punishment for a tiny offence. I think it will work. If there are no loud cries of injustice, I'll perform this procedure on the four abovementioned packages in one of the following days. -- Best regards, Alexander Rødseth Arch Linux Trusted User (xyproto on IRC, trontonic on AUR)
