[PRQ#42547] Deletion Request for bbswitch-pf
MarsSeed [1] filed a deletion request for bbswitch-pf [2]: Unmaintained package from 2021. Not needed: the latest extra/bbswitch-dkms can be installed for the linux-pf kernel as well. [1] https://aur.archlinux.org/account/MarsSeed/ [2] https://aur.archlinux.org/pkgbase/bbswitch-pf/
The package doesn't require changes besides bumping pkgrel each time it is build. There is no need for changes since 0.8 was the last release of bbswitch.
But it needs active maintenance. Repo bbswitch-dkms package is patched to work correctly on Linux 5.18+ kernels, whereas this is not. It is better to delete this in my opinion and let users install whichever DKMS module they need to any of the kernel packages either from repo or from AUR. Also I had another consideration when submitting this deletion request. I lean to think that people who choose the leading-edge, performance oriented linux-pf mod won't need the 10+ years old Bumblebee solution for hybrid NVIDIA+iGPU laptops that are similarly old. (Such an ancient hardware's best chance to function now is to stay on one of the earlier Linux LTS kernels that still supports its devices with drivers.) My personal example serves as a good case-in-point. I still use a 2016 laptop (5th-gen Intel Core-i7 CPU, Nvidia GeForce + Intel Broadwell iGPU). I never needed Bumblebee, and it didn't even work with the official NVIDIA driver, only the legacy nouveau driver. (And nouveau does not support using my NVIDIA GPU from 2016 as a functional GPU, only as a dumb video display card.) The latest NVIDIA official driver, on the other hand, supports Nvidia Optimus (hybrid GPU) / Prime offloading switching even on my 2016 laptop. So I think its quite safe to drop this bumblebee / bbswitch mod for PF kernel. On 22 June 2023 17:02:58 GMT+02:00, Marcell Meszaros <marcell.meszaros@runbox.eu> wrote:
