[PRQ#85533] Deletion Request for pod2man
Namarrgon [1] filed a deletion request for pod2man [2]: This only creates a symlink from /usr/bin to /usr/bin/core_perl/, which is already in $PATH on a stock arch system with perl installed. The exercise is pointless, the user should fix their $PATH instead. [1] https://aur.archlinux.org/account/Namarrgon/ [2] https://aur.archlinux.org/pkgbase/pod2man/

Deleting this will break many downstream packages. The AUR page lists ten consumers. I suggest to contact the maintainers of those packages and ask them to remove `pod2man` from their dependencies, so this package can be removed. And yes, I agree that this package is basically pointless, but it would be better to first fix those packages.

Hi, last year I have builded several of the pkgbuilds which makedeepnds on pod2man without it and succeded with both makepkg and devtools Have then commented on colobot-gold kdocker lemonbar lemonbar-git lua-oocairo nedit (also failed to build at the time) Didn't coommet on kdocker-git have one of the maintainers of kdocker python-xlsx2csv-git is a new pkgbuild (2026-07-31) zoneminder and zoneminder-git are confusing it with podman it is listed as optdepnds with 'pod2man: required for Docker support' I have missed libvirt-sandbox; I see there it was added by an user that is on Artix afaik Looking a years later got only reply and removal on colobot-gold Over time I got some people asking to add pod2man as makedepnds but didn't get the root cause

Have then commented on colobot-gold kdocker lemonbar lemonbar-git lua-oocairo nedit (also failed to build at the time)
Thanks for checking those!
Didn't coommet on kdocker-git have one of the maintainers of kdocker
python-xlsx2csv-git is a new pkgbuild (2026-07-31)
I looked at this package and it builds fine without the `pod2man` package. However, I had to fix (or rather skip) the version test in `check()`. I will leave a comment there later.
zoneminder and zoneminder-git are confusing it with podman it is listed as optdepnds with 'pod2man: required for Docker support'
I didn't notice it was an optdepend; I guess it was supposed to say `podman`
I have missed libvirt-sandbox; I see there it was added by an user that is on Artix afaik
I just left a comment there, but the maintainer cannot do anything until the AUR pushes are back.
Looking a years later got only reply and removal on colobot-gold
Over time I got some people asking to add pod2man as makedepnds but didn't get the root cause
I also don't understand why some people see this error, I think it just a misconfiguration error.
Request #85533 has been Rejected by Muflone [1]: I'm for deleting it but currently it breaks a lot of packages for zero benefits [1] https://aur.archlinux.org/account/Muflone/
