I can't reproduce your issue. Removing a '.beta' suffix after the main version number will always make it larger, because now there's the 'r' prefix from the commit number where the 'b' one was. $ vercmp 6.0.0.beta5.r 6.0.0.r -1 I guess if there was an unusual alphabetic suffix starting with a letter after 'q', then it would be a problem; is that what you were referring to?
