And btw the proposed patch for the also 20 years old bug 865 has been rejected by upstream because it violates the XKB protocol specification. That patch is for renitent Microsoft Windows users who refuse to accept that on Linux they cannot use Ctrl+Shift or Alt-Shift etc. for keyboard layout switching, because it is not supported by said protocol. They could use any other key combination that involves a regular key together with modifier key(s).
