It is actively maintained. For further information see the pinned comments.
I hope that helps. If you don't want to wait until 1.9 is stable and you don't want to compile it yourself, you can use the atom-editor-beta-bin package (I use it on a daily bases). Otherwise try the atom-editor package which has a patch that packages it with a newer version of electron, I think.
