[pacman-dev] Localization issues
Hi! It would be nice, if pacman accepted Y and N as yesno answer too. Because if a message hasn't been localized yet (for example 'Proceed with installation? [Y/n]' to hungarian now), it's annoying that if answer Y, pacman exits (because Y is localized to I). Bye, Nagy Gabor P.S.: Yes, you may say: There may exists a language where localized(I)==N or similar; so the localized answer should be checked first. In this pathological case (again .-) the untranslated messages are really annoying :-)

The best solution is to either update the translation or drop it (put it in storage until someone wants to update it). This would be very hacky to implement what you suggested, and not that useful to languages where Y and N have flipped usage from their English counterparts. -Dan

So in stable versions at least the yesno questions should be localized, because this is confusing... Bye, Nagy Gabor PS: Probably you can find up2date Hungarian localization in pacman-g2.

Nagy, Either we can or we can't- why don't you tell us? I guarantee our strings could be different so this is probably not the case. However, in any case, I sure don't speak Hungarian. What I was inferring is that maybe you could translate this yes/no question, otherwise we could just drop the translation for now until it is fully updated. -Dan

Submit a patch, please (it'll be in src/pacman/po/hu.po). In addition, you might want to make sure all of the questions are translated- there are a few different ones. See translation-help for more details, or look back in the threads here for some translation related stuff. -Dan

Problems with this email and/or patch. Here is what the raw message looks like to me: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64 LS0tIGh1LnBvLm9sZAkyMDA3LTAzLTA2IDE3OjMyOjIyLjAwMDAwMDAwMCArMDEwMAorKysgaHUu cG8JMjAwNy0wMy0wNiAxNzozNjoxMS4wMDAwMDAwMDAgKzAxMDAKQEAgLTc2MSw3ICs3NjEsNyBA QAogIkRvIHlvdSB3YW50IHRvIHJlbW92ZSB0aGVzZSBwYWNrYWdlcz8gW1kvbl0gIgogbXNnc3Ry ... Even if I do copy/paste the patch into a file, I have all sorts of weird encoding issues. The translation is currently ISO-8859-2, so a patch in UTF-8 is no good. Can you just attach your local file, being sure that the file encoding is consistent with what is listed in the PO file (either convert the translation to UTF-8 and update it in the PO file, or do your edits in ISO-8859-2)? In addition, it might be much easier to use a tool such as gtranslate or kbabel to do the translation. -Dan

I don't really understand what the problem is, but I attached the patch now (which is in iso8859-2 encoding of course) Nagy Gabor

Translating Y/N to use native language chars (i.e. J/N in German) is bad for users that use different keyboard layouts for English/native text input. For example in Ukrainian 'Proceed with installation? [Y/n]' can be translated as 'Почати інсталяцію? [Т/Н]' but to enter Т or Н chars user must to switch keyboard layout. So, for Cyrilic languages it's better to stick with Y/N but with translated question. -- Roman Kyrylych (Роман Кирилич)

We really have little to do with this- It is up to the translators to make that decision. We simply put both the questions AND the answers in gettext (ex _("Y") and _("N")). If you want to leave it, there is no problem at all with that- just don't translate the [Y/n] part of the question or the literal Y and N strings. -Dan
