[arch-general] Help understanding which interface OpenOffice is using?

Listmates, I have installed openoffice-core on my x86 box and I am trying to understand what user interface it is using and how to change it if I can. I suspect the very block like interface and large menu and menubar fonts are the result of the GTK interface oo on arch uses by default. (I could have this backwards). The default UI looks really awkward to me. It brings back bad memories of the days when the UI was limited to what you see on xpdf. The wiki(http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Openoffice) suggests an environment variable setting of OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde soffice, but warns that "KDE look will be removed in Openoffice3". What's the status of that? When will the QT interface go away? What is the best way to get a better looking interface on KDE3. I have tried using 'OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde soffice', but so far I get an error when attempting this over XDMCP. Is there something that will work in this situation as well? [arch-general] speakers don't turn off when headphones inserted

Hello, I just obtained a Fujitsu P7120 notebook (a very nice model, by the way). Overall, I am getting this working with Arch just fine (although I would definitely appreciate pointers from anyone else who has installed Arch, especially as I have been using a desktop until now and haven't had the need to configure notebook-type features). One problem I am having that I don't know how to fix is that when I plug in headphones, the speakers don't turn off. Alsamixer shows that the headphones and speakers have separate controls, something I have never seen in a notebook before. While cool, I would really love to have this automatically toggle as expected. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks, Scott

It is not sufficient to hide the window and make it appear again. If the corruption appears inside the text of a KDE editor, moving the cursor to the corrupted line should change its background color and thus force a redraw. Or if it appears in toolbars, I need to mouse over the toolbard to refresh it. This happens on both of my computers. [arch-general] Xorg/kdm login screen addition

Listmates, I though I would run this idea by the list and see if there was any aversion to the idea of adding hostname information to the xorg/kdm login display. I wouldn't change a thing about the login look, it's awesome. What I would propose is adding to the existing login greeter the 'hostname' of the machine it is running on. What prompted this suggestion was the situation where I had an archlinux box connected vi xdmcp to my laptop on tty8. After a day or so of working on my local box, I switched back over to tty8 and the question immediately came to mind "Which Archlinux install is this?" because there was no way to immediately tell. (Don't get me wrong, I only have 2 Arch installs, so the answer wasn't critical) But the point to be made, and the basis for this suggestion, is that it would be nice to have the host information available. Just a small addition to the dialog, after or under the Archlinux logo, that says something like "on: host.domain.com". That way, you know at a glance who you are dealing with. Obviously, this is just a minimal enhancement, but the path to perfection is taken one step at a time. Anybody adverse to something like this? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. greets, all! ever since the release of xorg-server 1.5.3, i've been using a modified PKGBUILD to build xorg-server sans hal and dbus. [arch-general] WPA2 - How to set with ACX card??

Listmates, My second Arch box is now complete (well almost:-) This time a desktop box with a zytel wireless lan adapter using the TI acx chipset and its firmware 2 is the acx111_2.3.1.31/tiacx111c16 firmware slice. The card is detected and works fine it think... I can open kwifimanager and it has my access point associated and I can watch the generic packets blip by and watch the strength meter do its thing, but I cannot authenticate :-( My system is WPA, and no matter how hard I looked, I couldn't find anything in Arch that would all me to configure the wireless as anything other than WEP. Bummer. Wep isn't allowed within 500 feet of anything I deal with. After spending a little time playing with aircrack, if you haven't already, you will definitely feel the same. Most wep secured wireless networkss can be cracked in less than 30 seconds. (why do you think I'm never without a wireless connection -- no matter where I go;-) So what tools are available to configure this acx111 card to use WPA-TKIP or WPA2? In that other Linux OS, the knetworkmanager utility did a great job with the Atheros bashed card in my laptop, XP has no problems with the card (this box is dual boot) so I know the hardware works fine. Hello, I am requesting package updates to libraw1394 and libdc1394 in extra. The new versions v2.0.2 and v2.1.0 respectively have support for the new experimental FireWire stack (not built by default in kernel26), Juju[1]. The old stable stack is still supported by the new packages, so they should still work with kernel26. Attached are the PKGBUILDs for each package, with trivial changes (version and md5sum). [2] shows there is no maintainer for libraw1394 so I'm posting them here. [arch-general] Issue with system time

Hi, in last few weeks I noticed a serious (for me) problem with my system. It simply does not update the date/time after boot up. In BIOS the time is correct, but when I boot Linux, the system time is set exactly to time when I turned it off last time. It's quite annoying to always have to set up the time manually. In rc.conf I have HARDWARECLOCK set to "localtime" and Time Zone to "Europe/Prague". I was trying to set automatic time sync in KDE System Settings, but it fails to connect to time server. I use KDE 4.2.70, so it might be bug there, but it does not bother me, the main problem is that my system refuses to update (load from BIOS?) time after boot up. Any ideas? [arch-general] Policykit, uid like a service, and gid like a user

I noticed after installing policykit that it created a new user and group (both called policykit). The thing that surprised me was the uid was 102 while the uid was 1001. Should a system service like that really have a uid below 1000 (like other service accounts) and a gid above 1000 (which is what users are given).
