What is the policy for Udev rules in ArchLinux? There are 2 places where udev rules can be placed, /lib/udev/rules.d/ and /etc/udev/rules.d/. Now, I think the /lib/ directory should be only for the rules coming from upstream udev, and the /etc/ directory is for rules coming from ArchLinux packages. If this is the policy everyone agrees on - and as far as I remember, udev devs recommends it too - maybe namcap can check that too? ps. the KVM package now has rules in /lib/ , so I'll open a bug report if that's not supposed to be like that. -- damjan

Hi, Here in Brazil (as probably in everywhere else) a few cell phone companies are offering wireless internet access through a USB modem. They say data is exchanged through 3G communication standard. How does that work on Linux? What should I have in archy to be able to work with such hardware and network, or where can I find about it? Thanks, Maurício

[arch-general] First Problem with pacman - Need to understand why

Listmates, I ran into my first problem with pacman and, I know what caused the problem, but I need to understand why pacman thought it was a problem to begin with. Here is the situation: Trying to start X, and one complaint was no /usr/share/fonts/TTF directory. I had a /usr/share/fonts/truetype directory so I just softlinked the missing TTF to truetype to get rid to the error on startx. startx liked the solution. Then I went to install audio-convert which noted additional dependencies of (blah.. blah.. mplayer), so I we to install the optional dependencies: **pms below is just aliased to 'pacman -Sy' [14:15 archangel:/home/david] # pms lame id3lib vorbis-tools flac faac faad2 musepack-tools mplayer <snip> checking package integrity... (12/12) checking for file conflicts [#############################################] 100% error: could not prepare transaction error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files) ttf-dejavu: /usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSans-Bold.ttf exists in filesystem ttf-dejavu: /usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSans-BoldOblique.ttf exists in filesystem ttf-dejavu: /usr/share/fonts/TTF/DejaVuSans-ExtraLight.ttf exists in filesystem <snip - remaining dejavu variants> Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded. And "Yes", DejaVu fonts did exist in /usr/share/fonts/TTF softlinked to /usr/share/fonts/truetype, but why does pacman care? If the same font already exists in a directory, that shouldn't cause the install to blow up -- should it? Well, since I cause the problem with the softlink, fixing it was pretty easy, but what I'm curious about is why it was a problem to begin with. I want to understand what the rules are for pacman so I don't cause any additional problems in the future with softlinks (which I use in moderation, but do use). Hi! We started some time ago our own national community, we are sharing experiences and knowledge in http://www.archlinux.cl/ . This Saturday we are participating in FLISoL (Latin American Festival of Installation of Software Libre) in many chilean cities, giving free Arch CD's, installing Arch and giving help and advice with configurations. We already have a mirror and are making some posters and stickers for this event. It would be great if we get recognized as an official International Community, and announce it in our speeches. [arch-general] Best way to clone install (package selection to another box?)

Listmates: If I want to clone my package selection to another box, is there a better way to do it other than just parsing the files in /var/cache/pacman/pkg to generate a list to feed to pacman after install on the second box? Something like: for i in $(find /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ -type f); do TMP=${i##*/} FILE=${TMP%%-[[:digit:]]*} echo $FILE >> ~/linux/INSTALLED done Then after install on the new box: pacman --sync --refresh pacman --sync $( < ~/linux/INSTALLED) --or-- while read file; do pacman --sync $file done < ~/linux/INSTALLED I've picked around a bit and can't find a pacman option that is somewhat the equivalent to rsync's '--files-from' that would allow me to read the list to pass to pacman directly from a file. I don't know if pacman can do something like this or how many files it can handle at once if the list of files is piped or redirected to it. I don't think the second while loop would work either from a dependency perspective, and, the repeated calls to pacman would make it slow as hell. [arch-general] vi went Orange on me?? Never seen it before -- what is it?

Listmates: I'm kind of chuckling at this one. I did a simple substitution in vi on 2009.02 to comment out a few samba shares I wasn't going to use from a smb.conf I copied over. I simply used ':35,72s/^/# /' and then -- Orange appeared over all the comments and leading whitespace in the file. See (38k): http://nirvana.3111skyline.com/download/screenshots/archlinux/vi-orange.jpg What is the magic that makes this happen and ... more important ... how do I turn it off? I don't even know what setting to start looking for on this one? Anybody else run across this? In case the environment is important to the answer, I on my laptop running openSuSE 11.0 using konsole on kde 3.5.10 and using ssh to open a terminal to my new archlinux box. Dunno? Listmates, Looking for my favorite swiss army knife for pdf files (pdftk) I was unable to locate it with pacman -Ss pdftk and no luck. But whoop! I found keepassx and basket, that's half the battle. I know have my cheat-sheets and I can unlock the doors ;-) If you use KDE and haven't tried basket notepads, you are missing one killer app. Same goes for keepassx. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. [arch-general] General Linux Server Information Available

Listmates, Just a general point of interest. Over the past 4-5 months, as time permits, I have made an effort to put up a site to capture some of the Linux notes, tips, etc.. that I have squirreled away over the years and make that information available to anyone that it might help. The site is 3111skyline.com and the top-level menu entries of interest are "openSuSE Howtos" and "Linux Tips & Tricks". Regardless of the main tab title "openSuSE Howtos", there is a bunch of stuff that applies to Linux in general, like the "openSuSE Server Setup" page, etc.., they are general enough to apply to any distro. Like tonight, I was using that page to setup and secure mysql, etc.. on Arch. The link to the "raw" information that has not been formatted into web pages is the "Linux Download Dirs..." link under the "Linux Tips & Tricks" menu. That is just a link to the directories for the website that has +Indexes enabled so you can just pick around and browse. There is a fairly cool collection of wallpapers, etc. in the directories that are not listed in the menus. Additionally, the complete 3-Column layout for the website itself has been packaged and made available for anyone who has thought about setting up a site themselves and wants a "go-by" to use to see how things work or to tear apart and take the useful/interesting parts from. All of the information is available under GPL3 (except for family photos, etc. that should be secured), so if any of the information would be useful to add to the Arch wiki, feel free to grab it and just copy and paste it to the wiki. I will try to add useful information to the Arch wiki, as time permits. Right now the site is hosted/mirrored on two openSuSE boxes sitting in my house. (I just change the external routing between the two depending on which one I am working on at the time) I am working to get my Arch install up and running on one of the boxes, so as soon as I pick through the apache configs and get apache and ssl configured on the Arch box, the site will be hosted there. That's it. No questions in this post. Just hopefully some help for anyone that can use some of the information I have squirreled away;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. Listmates, How is process loading handled at boot in Arch Linux? I found: [19:32 archangel:/etc] # ls -1 rc* rc.conf rc.local rc.local.shutdown rc.multi rc.shutdown rc.single rc.sysinit rc.d: <snip> But before I started hacking things I thought I would ask where I should put things generally (rc.local?) and then where to put the services that might need to be started earlier than rc.local (rc.sysinit?) I thought I would ask before I make a royal fool out of myself. (I like to minimize those times) Also, I have no problems setting the stuff up by hand, but I also wanted to check if there was any type of automated service manager like chkconfig, just in case.
