[arch-general] how to give Date&Time root priviledge

Hi all, I use kde4.7. As the time zone does not set correctly, I tried to change the timezone as "America/Toronto" in rc.conf. it did work but the time still not right. So I used date&time --KDE control module to adjust time, it said 'System policies prevent you from saving the date/time setting', and asked me input the password for root. The authentication failed, I am quite sure the password was correct. I guess I didn't add time in user group. Any solution about this? Thanks a lot. Adrian

[arch-general] Where has my /etc/networks gone?

I'm playing around with schroot and when creating a chroot with "type=directory" I at first failed to start it. The reason seems to be the lack of the file "/etc/networks". I created an empty one, and that was accepted by schroot. However, the man page (networks(5)) is rather cryptic, so what is this file for? [arch-general] Evolution Missing from Testing

When I do a 'pacman -Syu', I'm getting an error that evolution-3.2.2-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz cannot be found though the testing list file shows that file. It sounds to me that the repo is not in sync or something.

[arch-general] Gnome Shell freezes

Dear arch users and developers, I have posted this issue also in the archlinux forum [1]. I didn't get much feedback there. So I'm hoping some people here might have an idea of how to resolve the problem. Problem: gnome shell freezes from time to time (actually daily). Freezing: "Freezing" means, the screen becomes unresponsive but everything seems to continue working (sound and videos continue playing; even the mouse pointer can still be moved). Most of the time I'm able to switch to a virtual console although sometimes it takes 10-20 seconds after CTRL+ALT+F1 to show up. Then, however, everything is running smoothly. It's not possible to restart X since it will freeze again at the gdm login screen, or even without using gdm when loading the desktop. What triggers the problem: Usually it happens while scrolling on websites or pdfs. I feel like it happens more often if there are large images. Hardware: IBM T60 ATI X1400 I think it's an issue with the open source radeon drivers. However, this problem doesn't occur using other desktop environments. [arch-general] Time delay problem with latest [core] kernel

Hi, I'm using the latest kernel from [core] (linux 3.1-4), and experienced a terrible delay of software MIDI synthesizers. I'm using fluidsynth, using ALSA as the output driver (I simply can't get jack working), and VMPK as a keyboard MIDI event generator. The delay used to be fine, but with the latest kernel, it's longer than 0.5 secs --- that's unusable. [arch-general] Display issues with Linux 3.1

Since updating to Linux 3.1 yesterday, I've been having strange problems with the display on my laptop. The first reboot after updating the kernel went normally, but every subsequent boot since then has had problems. This is a Dell Latitude D620 laptop with the following graphics-related lines in the lspci output: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) During boot, at the stage where it says "Waiting for UDev uevents to be processed", the backlight normally blinks and the display mode changes, presumably due to udev detecting my graphics hardware. Since the kernel update, the backlight still blinks off momentarily, but when it comes back on, the screen remains blank. Rather than seeing the rest of the boot messages, the display is just black (but backlit). The system still seems to boot like normal; I boot to the virtual console rather than starting X automatically, and once the hard disk activity stops after booting, I can blindly type my login credentials and issue shell commands, though I still can't see any output. Additionally, after the first reboot following the update (which did not have the aforementioned display problems), I had issues with the display backlight after starting X. If I shut the laptop lid, the backlight usually shuts off, and comes back on when I reopen it. However, after the kernel update, around 80% of the time, the backlight seemed to come back on at about a third of its usual brightness. I had to close and reopen it several times, and eventually it would come on at full power like normal. I managed to boot the system in single-user mode using the fallback initcpio image (any other combination of boot options seemed to result in the blank screen), and then downgraded the kernel back to 3.0.7. After downgrading, all of these problems seem to have disappeared. I've scanned through dmesg output and I don't really see anything out of the ordinary. But I admit that I don't really know what I'm looking for. Any thoughts or suggestions?
