Remove ck-launch-session from your ~/.xinitrc again.
Change "exec ck-launch-session startxfce4" back to "exec startxfce4" and your user should be able to shut down from Xfce4 again. I don't know if this will fix your USB issues.

made the change but it didn't work, if I can't find what they butchered this time before the night freight train to Cairns grinds past in half an hour I'll give up and re-install tomorrow. mick
