Strange, this should not have changed. Could you try downgrading kernel and/or bluez to see what triggered the regression?
3) I am aware of a migration to bluez 5 - do I need to remove bluez4 and replace with bluez5 or is it too soon? i.e. is this user error? I have relied on pacman for updates as I didn't see any notes about manual adjustments.
No user intervention should be required, almost everyone will be staying on bluez4 for now (unless doing development/testing).
