There's a problem with the community repo which prevents it from updating. >From the log: cvs update: failed to create lock directory for `/home/cvs-community/community/devel/glib2-docs' (/var/lock/cvs/community/devel/glib2-docs/#cvs.lock): Permission denied cvs update: failed to obtain dir lock in repository `/home/cvs-community/community/devel/glib2-docs' cvs [update aborted]: read lock failed - giving up Hopefully an admin will fix that soon. Hi! I'd like to apply to become a Trusted User. I talked to Angel Velásquez (angvp) on IRC and he said he would be my sponsor. I've used Arch Linux since early 2006 and Linux since 2001. I've also been doing some work on Arch Linux PPC, mainly been trying to keep the packages that I use up to date, but I've also been working on tools to make it easier to do so... but I haven't yet completely figured out the best human-friendly way to see what needs updating and rebuilding. Currently I maintain packages related to the D programming language in the AUR, and recently got permission for Arch Linux to distribute the D compiler. It's closed source, however the front-end is open source and there are already a couple of open source D compilers, however the gcc-based gdc is not very maintained (doesn't work with gcc versions > 4.1) and the others are quite early in development. I used to maintain a small binary repository but I don't think a lot of people actually used it. But I did get quite a bit of experience with the repository tools and how to build packages. After adopting most of the D-related packages I no longer needed to host my own. I'm also quite interested in the Lua programming language, and I maintain a few Lua packages and so far one got adopted by another TU into community. I used to be a rabid Debian user but the one thing that annoyed me was how you almost had to read a book in order to create your own packages. In Arch Linux it was so easy to create them and that's the main reason I use this distribution. I really like when things are simple! My list of AUR packages: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?K=Anders&SeB=m Note that I haven't updated the gdc packages yet, I think they're kind of tricky to install since the gcc makefiles aren't really helpful when you want to install one frontend only. About me: I'm Swedish and 17 years old. Most of my interests involve computers, such as programming, IRC, games... it's a bit hard to think of all the things I do because I often like to try new things. I'm currently focusing quite a bit on web dev such as PHP and Django. I'm not much of a web design guy so it's mostly the coding part that interests me. My native language is Swedish, and I did English in school ever since 1st grade, however most of my English is self taught because of all the time I've spent on IRC and other places on the Internet. I have an Arch 64 installation so building 64-bit packages isn't a problem for me. Regards, Anders

Hi TUs (and other interested parties), Many of you may have noticed that there are eight TUs in the new bunch of developers bought on in the past weeks (http://www.archlinux.org/news/401/). That is about 1/3 of the total TUs. So we thought we let you know what was happening with our TU positions. The good news is that we do not intend on resigning from our TU positions in the immediate future. We are joining the dev team to help take some strain of the devs and don't want to create strain for the remaining TUs by oprhaning all our community packages in the process! We may want to orphan some packages in the community/unsupported repo as our workload becomes larger with picking up packages to maintain in the main repos, but we will deal with that if/when the time comes. Comrades, Now that Firefox 3 is stable, I think we need to consider cleaning up the packages related to such on the AUR. A lot of these firefox3 ones are no longer needed: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?O=0&L=0&C=0&K=firefox&SeB=nd&PP=100&d… For example: arch-firefox3-search - "arch-firefox-search" should be updated for version 3 firefox3-bin - "firefox-official" should do the same thing firefox3-bin-pl - "firefox-official-pl" should be created to replace firefox3-i18n - same.. or maybe a variant of this package should be used rather than language-specific ones firefox3-rc-es - no longer needed Thoughts? Hi there. I've just stepped into the arch and I'd like to participate. The org package is highly out of date, so I updated it. I'd like to share this small contribution with everyone, but the package is already maintained by rwanderley. I contacted the maintainer and sent him my updated version ten days ago, but had no answer to this day. Would it be possible to take the charge of maintaining this package ? take care Jiyunatori PS : what is the policy about renaming a package in the AUR ? is there a naming policy for emacs modes ?

This morning I looked orphan package and I found some packages that could be remove: - sharpmusique : source is not available anymore - eclipse-kde : source is not available anymore - fvwm-trans : outdate, did not build - gimp-freetype : made for gimp 2.0, not available from official gimp website - gnash-cvs : gnash use Bazaar now - kanola : did not build, no update by his creator since 2 years - kdeaddons4 : made and submited in 2006 - kdeedu4 : same ^ - kdepim4 : same ^ - kdeless : splited by his maintainer into other package - madman-devel : no update, problem with Faad, official website is down - menu : replace by archlinux-xdg-menu in community - menu-xdg : same ^ - netscape-navigator : closed-sources, end of support by netscape - poppler-qt4 : use old Qt4 from community - pynealpm: use old libalpm - qgnokii : depend on qt3 but still use depend=(qt) - sqcam-cvs : depend on kernel26 and was not update since 1 year... - xscreensaver-arch : did not work - ymessenger : no update since 3 years, PKGBUILD license is GPL ? - fluxbox-styles-boxwhore : boxwhore website is dead Hope this help.
