plotutils is an official GNU project. I wouldn't call it a niche
package. I personally use it and I'm glad that damir maintains it now
;-)

In my opinion most of the games are niche packages: What's niche is just
a matter of taste. 

I think having up2date technical/scientific packages in the official
repositories makes archlinux attractive for technical users (the
primary audience of archlinux).
