I do have evdev and hal runnning.

I had a look at the Xorg wiki page and I tried setting it up with hwd -xa 

That worked.  I am going to diff the configuration from hwd and 
Xorg -configure to see what is different.  

I had been following the beginners Guide from the wiki.
