I'm surprised that no-one seems to have checked the manpage for rm:
http://linux.die.net/man/1/rm

--no-preserve-root do not treat '/' specially (the default)
--preserve-root
    fail to operate recursively on '/'

Although i must admit that i didn't check arch's manpage yet.
