I consider myself not a "old timer", I installed Linux in 2005(Ubuntu), but I 
like "the arch way" very much.  

Being babied is not a thing I worried about, but about the complexity which 
has to be added for accomplishing this.  Its not an easy task to i.e. 
 - add some patched to installed software
 - let custom software be traced by the package manager
on i.e. Debian based distros.
