FWIW, i ran them again in succession two times each:

  tar -xv 1m 55s
  tar -xv 1m 37s
  bsdtar -qxv 0m 9.5s
  bsdtar -qxv 0m 9.5s

also, --fast-read yielded "invalid option" with tar.
