I tried to look this up but didn't find any info on this: Does the $repo
variable work at all, when used in pacman.conf itself, or does it only
work in a mirrorlist?
So maybe replacing "$repo" with the corresponding repo name would work -
or use the include and place your preferred mirror (with the $repo
variable) as the first position in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.
