I'll have to look to see if I have the same problem.  I wonder why
some people have been able to upgrade the kernel without incident and
others are having the problem with the panic? What version of
mkinitcpio is supposed to be in production these days?
The version on my system is 0.5.26-1 and was built back in July of
2009.
