Compiz isn't really gnome-specific, afaik. It just so happens that
it's most popularized by Gnome-based distros and there is a nice GTK
frontend for the configuration.

As such, since you can use Compiz with KDE/XFCE, it makes some sense
that compiz would have gnome compatability. I'm not sure to what
extent it changes for compatability, but it makes sense that compiz is
able to either handle keybindings itself or let Gnome take care of it.

I like that compiz examplifies the extreme degree to which Linux
allows for mixing and matching things. It's almost funny to talk about
things like KDE/XFCE/Gnome, considering they're all just collections
of smaller units, sometimes integrated together. You can really be
using the gnome panel, the gnome session, the KDE window manager, QT
apps with GTK apps, nautilus for your background, and dolphin as your
file browser. Go Linux!
