IIRC it supports data checksumming.

about the whole snapshot/volume naming thing: do what you think is best.
i cannot advise you because i don't know btrfs. however you mentioned
compatibility with older kernels and older btrfs versions. i wouldn't
worry too much about that, by the time we actually support btrfs,
kernel .33 and such will be behind us ;)
