To explain what happened... the wicd modules got installed in 
/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/, however python2 is looking for the 
modules in /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/

As stated above you should always do full upgrades. Failing to do so, 
results in no support from us.
