I don't have the answer, but I can confirm that I have seen this behavior
several times over the past 3-4 kernels. The current kernel is OK with the
nvidia, radeon and intel gpus on my boxes. But a couple of kernels ago I was
having to turn off the LCD displays because they would go blank but not black
(unpowered).
