i finally got around to trying this; it eliminated the "white box"
effect for me, on these two machines anyway (nvidia/radeon)

... i'm slightly curious why you *don't* see it Tom :-), i haven't
made the change on our netbook yet, which also uses i915, so we'll see
i suppose.
