Do you have list of applications that are broken? Could it be "fixed"
by recompiling those applications against 2.9.X?

I see that upcoming ubuntu is using 2.9.0
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=raring&keywords=libxml2 and I
assume their applications work fine
