Sorry, I'm not really able to help with startx stuff. It hasn't worked
for me since about 2007 or so. It seems pretty involved these days to
get it working. I've just been starting and stopping the display
manager, which is quite easy using systemd.

sudo systemctl start gdm

sudo systemctl stop gdm

Maybe this will help.
