I don't think you're doing anything wrong. Your setup is almost identical
to mine.

 % cat /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf | grep -v "^#"
[LightDM]
greeter-user=lightdm
minimum-vt=1
log-directory=/var/log/lightdm
run-directory=/run/lightdm

[SeatDefaults]
greeter-session=lightdm-gtk-greeter
session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession
autologin-user=daniel
autologin-user-timeout=0
pam-service=lightdm-autologin


[XDMCPServer]

[VNCServer]
