I may have been mistaken about scancodes vs keycodes (see 
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Extra_keyboard_keys#Scancodes).

Try this in a virtual terminal (ttyX, not xterm, gnome-terminal, etc):

    $  sudo showkeys --scancodes
