Hmmm... telinit -e looks very interesting. I was not aware of that. I
just outlined what I had in mind in my other email. It is not clear to
me yet if what I had in mind is equivalent to "telinit -e" or not, and
if so which is the "right" way to do it. I suspect telinit -e is the
way to go (we just have to make sure that no process is spawned before
we set up the right variables).
