No, it isn't necessary. You could specify pkgbase=fooforall and
pkgname=xorg-server-ipollutetheaur, and this would be fine to create a
single package called xorg-server-ipollutetheaur. The pkgbase is merely
an identifier which uniquely identifies a PKGBUILD.
