Update on this topic: so, it turns out OP appears to have done a few
things he didn't tell us about.

So, uh, did you actually export LD_PRELOAD?
Why did you not tell us about that, and do you have any understanding
of what either the shell's 'export' feature and LD_PRELOAD are?
