Request #4104 has been rejected by Muflone [1]:

This is poor choice to rename the python-gitpython package to python-
git as the -git suffix refer to the git version of a package. The
users will expect the python-git package will offer the git version of
the python package.

Please delete the python{,2}-git package and keep the python-gitpython
