Well, actually I am a bit biased. freebsd is more popular and more
widely used and everything, and I was quite happy with it the last
time I tried it. dragonfly on the other hand, I never went through the
install procedure :) I don't remember if it was mostly hardware
problems or something else.
But anyway, libdownload stated explicitly it was a fork from freebsd
libfetch, so that's the main reason I only looked at freebsd version
until now.
Now that I looked a bit at both :

http://www.dragonflybsd.org/cvsweb/src/lib/libfetch/
It looks like dragonflybsd version is basically an older version of
freebsd one. So that would be yet another argument for freebsd.
And a last fake one is that libarchive is also freebsd.
