Just as an FYI, I haven't forgotten this patch but I want to have time
to sit down and take it all in. I would really love to go somewhere
with all of this backend stuff as we know it can be improved, but I
have struggled each time trying to do it within the framework of this
be_* junk. I'm glad to see someone has had mild success.

I will try to look at this patch early this week.
