I can't quite grok the makepkg source code so I'll just demonstrate
what I do via a lil script. Enjoy! :D

echo "Creating temporary symlink $1-$2"
ln -s $1 $1-$2

tar -cvvzf $1-$2.tar.gz $(find $1-$2/ -type f)

echo "Removing symlink $1-$2"
rm $1-$2
exit
