I'm not sure. Always thought they are there on purpose (mostly used
bsdtar), even though they are usually not needful.

The current behaviors are:
bsdtar		keeps symlinks
gunzip		removes symlinks
bunzip2		removes symlinks
xz		keeps symlinks
