Thanks for changing the subject, btw. Here is a simple look at that
patch, gzipped and additionally unzipped and converted to bzip2.
dmcgee at galway /tmp
$ file --mime-type patch.gz
patch.gz: application/x-gzip
dmcgee at galway /tmp
$ file --mime-type patch.bz2
patch.bz2: application/x-bzip2
