It has not hit the master git branch yet, but I would expect it to hit 
in the next major pacman release (3.5?) which is probably months away.

Correct - for the local db.  The sync db format will not change 
(transition period is needed) but note that the sync dbs will not be 
extracted from their tarball any more.
