Ehm, SRCDEST, sorry :)

Of course a bare clone can be updated (man git-fetch). Only git pull
won't work. Also, regarding the problem in my other mail: git clone
--mirror might be the right thing.

Shallow is not useful, you might want to check out old commits or
different branches.
