You're right. I overreacted: I doublefacepalmed when I stumbled upon
the non-use of $(PYTHON) and went too far in trying to prevent that
oversight from ever creeping back into the code. Sorry! I'll write up
a replacement patch for this one (and leave the other half of this set
to Dave)...
